Lorrie Drejka is a recent transplant from New Jersey who now calls Denver, NC her home.  Lorrie fell in love with NC on her very first family vacation to the OBX when she was just 10 years old. So much so that it’s still almost an annual trip with her friends and family. Back In Lorrie’s early teens, her neighbor spotted firsthand Lorrie’s unique relationship with dogs. There were 3 neighborhood dogs who always got out of their yards and no one dared approach them because they were “ grumpy. “  Lorrie would just go up to these escapees and take them home to their owners. The neighbor observed that the dogs just accepted her, a natural skill if she ever saw one.

Dog's Best Friend Training Academy

  • Lorrie went on after college to become a G.I.A. Graduate Gemologist. After 12 years in the jewelry industry she switched careers and attended “National K-9 School for Dog Trainers” in Columbus, Ohio. She didn’t know what field she would specialize in so she took every course the school offered: Basic Obedience, Advanced Obedience, Off-leash, Dog Behavior, Puppy Development, Kennel Management, Utility and Retrieval, Handicapped Assistance, Scent Discrimination & Tracking, Search & Rescue, Personal Protection, Canine First Aid & C.P.R.

  • Upon graduating, she opened Dog’s Best Friend Training Academy. For the last 19 years (January 2018 will mark her 20th Anniversary) she had been teaching puppy classes twice a week at two local veterinarian offices. The vets would often recommend obedience training evaluations for any dogs with “issues.“  These evaluations sparked a realization in Lorrie that her primary focus, her goal in NC would be PUPPY SOCIALIZATION CLASSES! She’s passionate about socialization because it is the foundation of a dog’s behavioral development.

  • Lorrie has now teamed up with DCC to bring you an in-depth, 4-week course that covers: proper socialization techniques, basic obedience, problem solving Q & A’s about house training and play biting etc…. We also address behaviors such as Jumping up and pulling on the leash. Other important topics such as proper nutrition, appropriate toys, basic first aid, handling exercises prepare both owner and dog for real world events like vet visits and grooming. Also included are informational handouts about topics covered in class and additional handouts available as needed (bringing home a new baby, food aggression, coprophagia (poop eating), separation anxiety, and many other topics). Each class ends with dog-to-dog supervised play to help puppies learn appropriate play behavior for future encounters with dogs.

  • Lorrie is truly blessed because she clearly loves her job (and puppy breath!). She’s married and shares her home with 3 dogs (Jersey, Beans and Brook) and 4 cats. How the cats came to outnumber the dogs is a story for another time…

Toni offers both group classes and individual classes tailored to your specific needs, such as:

  • Puppy Kindergarten (4 Week class) is designed for puppies from 8-20 weeks. During class the puppies will socialize and have fun playing! They work on learning all of the basic cues and talk about desensitizing to common household items (vacuum, doorbell, broom, etc). She will also talk about understanding your dog's body language, discuss any puppy concerns you may be having, play some games, learn a couple of tricks and have fun!
  • Manners and Life Skills class (5 week class) is designed for dogs 6 months and older. She will review basic cues, and work on some advanced ones. She will incorporate some "life events" to prepare your dog to be in the real world--walking in a crowd, being OK with different people, learning heel, etc. This is a fun, energetic class!
  • Canine Good Citizenship class (6 week class) is designed for any dog! She will work on very specific cues from the American Kennel Club. Participants may choose to be tested at the end of class to earn their CGC certificate. CGC class is fun and you will be so proud of what you and your dog accomplish together!
  • Private sessions are designed for specific behavioral issues. She will meet in your home, at the training center or at any place where the problem arises!
